Dentistry has come a long way in the area of anesthesia and pain control. We make every attempt to keep you comfortable before, during and after your surgery. In the case of complex surgery, we also have many excellent oral surgeons and periodontists that we work with who are available to take care of you if we feel a treatment would best be handled by a specialist. Your health and safety are our primary concern! We want to make sure you to have the best possible outcome of treatment.
Top Five Reasons for Oral Surgery
1.In some instances it may become necessary to remove a tooth which is no longer functional or poses a threat to your overall health.
2.Your mouth may be too small for the size and number of teeth that you have. For most people this is true for wisdom teeth or in the case of moderate to severe crowding requiring orthodontic treatment (braces).
3.To replace missing teeth in order to restore function and esthetics. We restore implants placed by an oral surgeon or periodontist specialist that look and function like your natural teeth.
4.Corrective jaw surgery is needed if there is an abnormality in the way your upper and lower jaw develop. This is done by a specialist in a hospital setting under general anesthesia.
5.Traumatic injury may result in the need for an oral surgeon to splint a fractured jaw back together. Again this is done by a specialist in a hospital setting under general anesthesia.
Endodontic (root canal treatment)
No one wants to have a root canal but if you do need one it allows you to save a tooth where the pulp has become infected or has died. You have probably heard of many horror stories about root canal treatment but more often than not, if you treat a problem tooth early before it becomes too infected, the procedure can be quite painless. If the prognosis of root canal treatment is good, we recommend saving a tooth rather than removing it. We do some simple root canals in our office but if the tooth appears calcified or curved making the procedure very difficult, we will refer you to one of the excellent endodontist specialists our area. We will make recommendations based on what will give the best outcome of treatment. There is nothing like saving your own teeth.
Periodontal treatment (treatment of gums and bone surrounding your teeth)
Medical studies have shown that individuals with periodontal disease are more prone to heart attacks, strokes, uncontrolled diabetes, and low birth weight babies. Your dental health can definitely affect your overall health.
For those adults who have bone loss due to periodontal disease we recommend a more extensive deep cleaning (scaling and root planning). This is usually done in two separate appointments with anesthetic so that you won’t feel a thing! This is a conservative but important first step in slowing down the disease process. Most patients do quite well afterwards and within the first month notice a difference with less bleeding, better smelling breath, less puffiness of their gums, and a brighter teeth due to removal of the tartar, stain, and bacteria housed in them. In order to maintain your gum health after the deep cleaning is completed, it is important for you to be seen in more frequent 3 to 4 month intervals in order to keep the buildup and bacterial levels low on a consistent basis. If you have bone loss already, it doesn’t grow back but if you maintain the health of your gums you can go a long way in preventing further bone destruction from occurring. In some situations if we feel that you need additional gum treatment, there are several excellent local periodontist who can facilitate and manage moderate to severe gum disease (periodontitis) or grafting of areas where your gums are unstable and have receded.
